Knocking noise and sound of air escaping?

I have a 99 2.0l Ford Cougar and there is a knocking noise coming from the area around the fan belt. In addition to this once the engine has warmed up there is an intermittent sound of a short blast of air escaping from the same area which seems to affect the idle speed,any ideas ??
