Mend Volkswagen 1.9 Traffic 2 Starts Fine Miles

can anyone help? have 1.9 traffic 2?

van starts and runs fine for about 2-3 miles then seems like its mis-firring and puts out black smoke from exhaust.turn off and restart and it seems ok for about same distance.there is no engine management lights on either. dont know where to start hope someone has had similar problem.(i mean that in a nice way)
