how can i fix the air conditioning on my Ford S-Max?

i have had the refrigerant checked on my s-max air con and the valve and all is ok. i am told that the signal is not getting to the air con unit although it is showing 'on' on the dash board. what is likely to be wrong? someone mentioned a relay. where is this likely to be located?
