Mend Rover Impression Engine Overheating

my heater only blows warm air?

i have just bought a second hand rover impression the heater blows warm air at first then it goes cold and sometimes it blows hot for a little while. and if you put the engine under a bit of pressure it over heats. Any ideas what could be wrong.
