Mend Radiator Thermostat Heating

is my thermostat broken?

my boiler fired up for about 5 minutes and then cut out i assumed the stat had burned out so i by-passed it and it works fine but i only run it for 15 min bursts every hour as i don't want my tank overheating. Do you think my stat is broken or is the extremely cold weather affecting it.
