how do I fix my garage door handle? ?

How do I fix my garage door handle. The handle broke off and all I see on the one that is broke is bolt ends smooth circular ends. I see no screws to loosen. I have already bought the new handle, but the direction don't explain how to take the old one off. It is a single post through the back . I thought that possibly you hammer the post out . I just don't want to damage the door
