Front speaker error?

Ok. Speakers work just swell. However, the desktop speaker setting doesn't. Which is a problem, because I have desktop speakers. If I do switch it to 5.1 surround, the front speakers don't work. I'm using a soundblaster x-fi and the creative audio console. No sound plays at all unless I have Enable X-Fi CMSS-3d sound enabled and switched to surround.

Problem started after I downloaded the latest driver update to attempt to resolve that lovely popping issue they've had forever.
