I do not get alerted when a text message comes through my phone.. HELP!?

I have a nokia n97 mini and i do not get alerted at all when i get a text message.. No message sign, No ringing or vibration. I have to go into my inbox to check whether or not there is any new texts there. I have tried resetting my phone to its original settings but this still did not work.. Can anyone help??
