my zoom has malfunctioned....HELP?!?

the zoom lever appears to be broken on my panasonic lumix dmc fz8.....it refuses to zoom in while either capturing or reviewing pictures, the lens mechanism is fine I believe and there is no visible damage to the camera, and I do not recall dropping it ever...
