fujifilm 100a digital camera - unable to take any photos, can you help?

Hi,
I was given a fujifilm 100a digital camera for christmas and have just taken it on my first holiday. Disappointingly, it has suddenly developed the following problem:

The camera switches on but photos cannot be taken; shutter is stuck half open/closed but I can view the photos I have ready taken.

I have tried taking out the batteries & putting new ones in, cleaning my memory card, and switching it on & off but nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions?
