Mend MTD 12.5 hp Mtd Mower Transmission

MTD 12.5 hp tranny sticking in neutral?

I have an older MTD 12.5 hp riding mower that the transmission does not want to shift into forward or reverse gears. There are no belts or pulleys for this model, just a shifting rod. I was able to rock the machine back and forth, and it would finally click into gear, but now nothing happens. Any ideas on what to do for this problem?
