The answer is the earth wire was disconnected from the battery - to all who have struggled!

are any of the red led's working -if they are has the stylus gone on full deflection and is stuck in middle,if so try easing it back to its normal rest position [away from centre]with your finger.-when power is disconnected at any time stylus deflects fully and sometimes sticks in middle. if led's dont light try looking at face whilst door is moved from fully open to fully closed looking to see if at any point that clock/led's work.if so then could still be ribbon track broken/bad connection. hope this is of help.

Thanks k - ribbon all seems intact, this happened since disconnecting the batteries. All fuses seems good but can't even find fuse diagram - so think I must have knocked a cable or something. Any ideas on finding a diagram or manual at all?

it may be the wire "ribbon" that adjoins tacho unit to opening lid, with constant opening/closing of tacho lid it eventually breaks,you would be best taking vehicle to approved tacho centre for their diagnosis.
