Mend BMW 318i Overheating Temperature Gauge

overheating?

I have a BMW 318i , 2002 reg, and it seems to be
getting hot and it smells very hot ,,,But the
temperature gauge reads norm. But the yellow heat
light come's "on" . The water is full to correct level.
So is there anyone who can help me with this
situation ! All help wil be recevied with thanks.

I have a bmw 318, when i was driving the car seem fine. it when i parked the car, smoke come out from the bonet and water leaking from under the engine?

check thearmostat, take it off, and place in a pan of boiling water, if it opens, then its ok. also check water pump if thearmostat o.k. if thats working. check water is going though radiator correctly.
