2001 ford transit engine problem?

my engine starts first time but when its been running a few minuates its makes a growling sound ,someone said they think its a valve gone because theres a pulse feeding back through the air filter inlet hose it still drives perfect no loss of power does this sound like a valve problem and how much would it cost to fix .
