What causes loud noise?

I have used my Dirt Devil carpet Shampooer, model # 6105, for some months. It belonged to my daughter and she gave it to me. It worked very well until a few wks. ago. Now when I start it it makes a terrible noise and there is a funny oder. I have taken it apart as much as I can. But I don't see any belts or moving parts at this point. Can anyone please help me?
