Hi,
This happened to me also. Problem was faulty break light switch. Check if rear break lights are working, if not, it will be stuck in park.
As a very quick fix you can manually override the lock. Do this by inserting a small screwdriver into the small rectangular slot on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel approx level with the gear lever just above where the carpet meets the plastic tunnel cover. Engage the plastic lever and pull it back towards the rear of the car. This is for emergencies only as you won't have any break lights, but at least will get you going.
Replacing the break light switch it is quite straightforward. Part number is 93BB 13480-BB P6MGA (1996 model) or obtain from wrecker. It is secured by a bayonet-type lock on the plate just above the break pedal: just twist clockwise (I think) and pull it off. Cable comes away by squeezing metal lock band and pulling off. Install new one by following reverse of above. 10 minute job tops.
Jobs a good-un.
