Mend Murray Lawn Model Mowing

I have a Murray 12HP Lawn Tractor, (Model #282707)with B&S engine?

I hit something while mowing the grass and broke the belt. The mower kept running. I removed the broken belt and drove it 2 block home and now it won't crank. Replaced the flywheel key as a precaution. It turns over and spit gas out the carb but won't crank. New plug installed also.
Any suggestions before I go into the engine?????????
