Mend Kohler M20

Kohler Magnum won't fire!?

I have a Kohler Magnum M20. It turns over, but won't fire. The PTO clutch had a short(exposed bare wire)which I repaired. I started the mower, flipped the PTO switch and the mower immediately quit. The engine now trurns over, but will not start. I am not getting a coil spark. Could a short have damaged the coil?
