overheating in mercedes vito 2.8?

I have a vito van/bus, it drives well on a free road, but once I get caught in a hold up, it starts to overheat and hot water coming out of the radiator. I have got burnt several times ( trying to open the lid). I like the van, the water bottle is not leaking. How can i fix it. What do I need to do to fix , without breaking the bank,please
