My salt refill is on the inner side of the washer I struggle to get it in without spilling it everywhere any ideas on how this can be done

Not table salt - use special dishwasher salt - available from supermarkets and also from some hardware stores in bulk - much cheaper.

Below the bottom shelf is a 4" screw top - put the granular dishwasher salt in there - fill it up if you wish - put the lid back on.
