How can I stop the delay start buttons from flashing ?

I tried to use the delay start feature on my 2 1/2 yr old Zanussi Essential 1600 washing machine. The three lights started to flash in sequence but I was unable to use the feature so I turned the machine off. The lights are still flashing and the machine will not start. I even pulled it out and switched it off at the mains, but nothing seems to work. I have also looked at the manual and followed their instructions but nothing works! I really can't afford to call a repair man out as I have two kids at uni and two still at home, so any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks
