Mend Bissell 7901

alignment of piston in Smartmix unit?

How can I align the piston to the rotary switch when re-assembling my Bissell 7901 cleaner? I don't seem to be able to get the piston to raise and lower when changing from Water rinse to High Traffic.
Any ideas?
