how to time my motor briggs 287707?

I replaced the stator on this motor and when i put it back together the timing is off. It backfires through the carb. where did I go wrong?

Not a clue where you went wrong, the timing is done by the woodruff key in the crank, assuming the key is in plass and not sheared it should be ok.
