when sewing the thread gets tangled under the material?

It sounds like you need to get the tensions sorted out, the top tension should be about 4 or 5 and the bottom tension should be able to pull through with slight resistence only, if it is too tight slacken the large screw on the bobbin case about a quarter of a turn anti clockwise and test and keep doing it until you get it right.
