a leaking exhaust gasket will cause a loss of back pressure that will only affect performance at lower revs but it will not stop it starting, the kickstart is just sticking if it doesnt return properly dont worry about that too much. as i said in the 1st reply and m also mentioned the compression needs to be sufficient and if its not then it wont run, your more than likeley had a partial seizure before the lights and when the revs dropped down to an engine speed that allowed the compression to drop off it will stop like it did.its really worth taking the head /exhaust and barrel off to have alook at it if you cannot determine if the compression is good enough. The piston will have some scores on the side of it and be a bit blackened usually also the barrel may have matching marks if so a new piston and rebore to the barrel will be the answer but the cause could be many things.FIX THE CAUSE.or you will be back at square one again!
1,make sure the head gasket is not all mangled as these have habit of killing head gaskets if its a watercooled model the gasket is just a rubber oring type gasket and they disintegrate.
2,the oil pump and water pump(just oil pump on air cooled models) are both driven off a small belt behind the variator that runs off a small pulley wheel on the crankshaft ,these belts break and causes bad problems like heat seizures and seizures due to lack of lubrication.
