What causes the turbo to switch off on my Ford Focus Diesel?

I have a Ford Focus Estate (x reg) 1.8 diesel. After driving for about 100 yards after switch on the turbo switches off. What can cause this? I have checked all the pipes for splits and all appear fine.

are you sure the turbo stops operating,try revving and watch the intercooler pipes expanding while you do this,must be some boost there if they are.might be worth checking for trouble codes if you know of anyone with a reader
