Mend basic office chair Gas Its

gas lift office chair has relased its gas. What can I do to fix it?

My 15 yr old gas lift basic office chair has had problems with popping up uncontrollably to its highest level for a few weeks. When you sit on it it collaspes down. Just now it relased its gas, with a foul smell and some black dust particles dropped onto the floor. Is it dead or can I fix it?
