how can I fix my Kenmore progressive upright model 35923?

Removed the screws on the bottom of my vacuum to remove a clog in the area where the hose attached to the cleaner. Now I can't get the housing to go back together to reassemble vacuum. There seems to be something in the center area that prevents it from closing together.
