Mend MTD 289707-0154 Engine Starter Ignition

12.5 hp B&S wont start. Makes a high pitched squeal when you turn the igni?

It makes a high pitched squeal when you turn the ignition, and a thin line of smoke can be seen coming from either the starter or the cable attached to the starter. Is the starter bad, or do I have other problems? the model # of the engine is 289707-0154 and it is on a MTD yard machine

It could be a variety of things. Be sure that the battery cables are installed on the proper terminals. Starters will run backwards and the drive won't release the gear. WIth that done and still no cigar- remove the cover over the gear to inspect wear on the gear , drive and flywheel ring gear.
