pathescope gem rheostat?

the rheostat gets very hot when working and I am wondering if this is normal. Also there is a whitish coating on the wiring and I would like to know if this coating should be cleaned off to show the copper wiring. The variable speed works fairly well when the adjustable lever is moved,

yes this is quite normal on a gem projector this item does get hot to clean rheostat use an old toothbrush with care
