Fuel pump on Ford Focus TDCI?

Have just looked at a TDCI that the AA diagnosed as fuel pump problems.
Someone else has had a go at this motor and removed the inertia switch.
I have been told, very surprisingly that it was still running but now does not,have hand primed the injector pump and that has some effect.
Have been told that the intank pump will cost £600.Can you advise.
