How can i get connected to the internet?

My modem has power light solid green and lan light solid green. The usb light and asdl and link light do not come on. My modem is smart 882 type . Can you tell me what is wrong that i cannot get connected. I downloaded avg security a week ago and my desktop went blank. I have restored it but cannot get connected. Can you help me. My desktop is windows xp. I am on talk talk
