Engine malfunction light?

My car's engine malfunction light also comes on, but then it cuts out and my car doesn't want to start again. Unless it is standing for a couple of minutes - it is like when is almost "cooled down" then it starts again. It is nissan almera 2005 model. What can the problem be? Can anyone assist me?
