I've got two possible answers.
1) Virus.
So you will want to do a virus scan to detect and clear.
Goto

There are a couple of virus scan programs that boot up importantly Before windows.
2) Bad sectors on hard drive
Windows would switch off quickly to protect itself.
(May mean having to buy a new hard drive)
I would remove hard drive
attach to another PC as slave (reposition those jumpers)
Goto Properties, Tools, Error-Checking, tic Fix & Recovery
When complete reboot PC - windows may prompt it will do more repairs. Then you repeat Error-checking again.
Do until you don't get any bad reports.
Place hard drive back in Packard (reset those jumpers to Master)
