Mend Dell d600 512 Ram Computer

Dell d600 memory?

I have 512 mb of ram in my computer and when I install another 512 chip it has me hit f1 to accept it and then after the unit is rebooted it says it has to reduce the memory back to 512 and hit f1 again.

Anyone know what the problem is
