Thanks gunner and casper, i took the filter out as you say and it was full of rubbish, so i cleaned and replaced it, still didn't work, so i removed the waste pipe where it connects to the u-bend and wella it was full of what i can only describe as congealed washing powder, removed all of this and washing machine is up and running again :)

I had the exact same prolem and found a sock stuck in the discharge pipe!
Remove the back cover and disconnect the drainage pipe between the drum and the pump. You will probably find a piece of clothing. This is relatively simpe to do.

Unplug the machine from the mains power supply befor starting.
You either have a blockage or the pump is not running. If the outlet hose is in a stand pipe take it out and put it in a bucket or bowl, if the pipe is secured to the rear of the machine it must be released so the entier hose is lower than the drum. If water runs out then there is no blockage but the pump is not working, to stop the water from flowing just lift the end of the pipe above the top of the machine. If there is a blockage you will need to empty the tub first. Drag the machine out a bit and tilt it backwards so the water inside is lower than the door opening, you should now be able to open the door and bail the drum out with a jug. When it is empty, lower the machine and remove the back panel to gain access to the sump (the most common place for blockages) it is the Black T shaped hose under the rear of the machine. Tilt the machine forward slightly and wedge a wasing-up bowl under it and the sump hose, (providing you dont sit on the machine a platic bowl is strong enough to hold its weight).Remove the sump hose and inside should be a plastic tubular filter, remove this and clean it out, it will probably have a sock in it.If the pump is faulty it will be at the other end of the sump hose, the washing-up bowl will still be required because there will be a certain amount of water left in the hoses, there could be a clip or something inside the impelor housing, but to unscrew it you will need a star shaped screwdriver bit, which looks something like this end on *
