a big problem with transit is the E.G.R [exhaust gas recirq vale] giving up.[ 90% of the time this is the cause of black smoke and poor starting and lack of power]

both of you are wrong, black smoke coming out of the exhaust is a signe of Incomplete Combustion or too much fuel, in the case of too much fuel you could have a Ecu problem

in the short term, try some injector cleaner/emissions improver in the tank. if problem persists, the injectors or pump may need some attention!
