VCR player will not wind up on left side when in "play" ?

I have an Emerson 13" color TV/VCR EWC1303A that will not play at VCR tape all of a sudden. The tape starts to play but is not winding up on the opposite side, so the tape ribbon is going loose in the tape deck, the tape tries to eject, and the TV goes off. But the tape ribbon is loose (about a foot of it) inside the tape deck and has to be gently pulled out and manually rewound on the tape. Different tapes do the same thing. A VCR cleaner tape seems to run but also shuts off the TV. I have tried spraying compressed air for cleaning computers etc, but that didn't seem to help.
