my gas fire is just 12 months old?

and when I ignite it it goes out when I release the switch on the side any suggestions??? do I need a new battery or is the thermothinggy gone and need replacing. Gas is coming into the fire but does not stay and it looks like once I take my hand off the ignition switch gas goes out
