heating works when it feels like it?

the red and green buttons come on at the right times, i have replaced the batteries. but it only ignites ramdonly, sometimes it lights up and works, other times its calling for heat, but the boiler dosent light up. it can go off for a good 24 hours before it decides to work again. its a matter of luck.
