My vaillant boiler dial is in the red on the heating side

you have got to much pressure in the system, release some excess water out through a radiator air bleed valve till the system pressure drops back down to around 1 to 1.5 bars working pressure.
if after doing this it climbs up to the red again further investigation of the system will be needed.
