Mend Hotpoint WMA44 Washing Machine Bad Smell Filter

Hotpoint WMA44 Bad smell?

I cleaned out the filter on my WMA44 because it would not fast spin, sorted out that one.
But now after a couple of washes it smells really bad, took the filter of again but it was bone dry, should this hold a small amount of water?, it was full when I first took it off.
Any ideas?
