Top flushing Idean Standard toilet cistern?

When the toilet is flushed, the flow of water doesn't stop when the cistern empties. The water carries on running into the toilet. Tapping and pressing on the flush buttons does make it stop, allowing the cistern to fill, but it's becoming increasingly more difficult to make this happen - only a matter of time till it goes altogether and I won't be able to stop the water flowing.
