no reverse on model 68 rideing mower?

i have just bought a 68 john deere rideing mover it dose not have any reverse gear wondering what i have to do to fix new diff or what thanks terry

If the mower goes fine forwards, it isn't a diff problem - more like a stripped cog in the transmission, I think. Does the reverse gear lever seem to have a full travel to it?
