Boot repair -slim shaft?

My daughter has rather wide leg calfs so we purchased a pair of boots w/ a wider circumference. The boots technically were wide enough but were in need of taking in-a bit. My shoe repair man seemed hesitant which surprised me but agreed to the repair. It did not seem difficult to me ( I would have done it - or tried-but my machine could not handle the 'thickness' of leather) I thought it would be done at the back seam (of boot) but he said he would do the work at the zipper. I believed he must know what was correct. Now, boots are done? In both boots, there is a bulging effect in the leather, he didn't sew straight down. (Sewed on a curve) It looks terrible. A straight line stitch would have prevented that. One boot seam is slightly off center in the back which doesn't surprise me & one tighter than the other, minor compared to the bulging zippers. My daughter is terribly disappointed. She has never been able to wear a proper leather boot. Where can I get them fixed now? I believe that it can be done. It appears shoe repair men only do heels and soles, I didn't realize that was the case. Are there no cobblers around who can help me. I have them chalked & ready to go. Help!
