Hi,
It could be that the preferences have been changed for displaying picture placeholders rather than pictures. This is handy if you're working on a particularly graphical document.
Go to Tools -> Options
With the view tab highlighted, make sure that the tick is removed from the Picture placeholders option.
Click ok, and your pictures should reappear.
