caravan fridge?

fridge works on 12 volt and mains electric .but does not get cold when on gas .caravan about 12 years old .no problem lighting pilot light ,but no cold fridge .i have been told to take fridge out and turn upside down for 24 hours,would that help.i have only just bought the van,it has been standing for several years .hope you can help ,many thanks
