why is my Zanussi washing machine not starting?

Old but very reliable Jetsystem ZFL1011 no longer starting. On/off /temperature knob came off as parts worn, but could still turn machine on by using a pair of plier to turn spindle, then it started to be hit or miss if machine would start , now not starting at all.
