reversing doors on gram fridge/freezer?

our gram fridge/freezer has a crack in its upper door hinge, so we're trying to reverse the doors. in the instruction book this sounds straightforward, but in fact the lower hinge cannot possibly be reversed; the pin to support the freezer door would be pointing down to the floor.....
should a spare metal hinge plate have been supplied when the appliance was new???
we're now stuck on a Saturday evening with a fridge on its back and nowhere to put our frozen foods...
