not too sure, but I would recommend checking the fuse in the mains plug, thats usually the first thing to go. In future, plug the cable into the device first and then plug into the wall socket, wall socket connections are safer and more secure than the smaller connection on most devices, in your case it was probably a kettle lead type cable.
